We had 3 days of filming at Island Lake Lodge which will go down as one of the deepest of the season!

Island Lake Lodge Catskiing is a premier multi day stay operation with amazing tree runs, open bowls and just mind bending fall line riding.

Craig Kelly made this place famous and photos from photographer Mark Gallup have likely inspired many snowboarders over the years.

This was my second trip up to “the Island” and just wished I had not filmed as a solo mission with my gopro but had my whole crew, because this would have been the shoot of the decade.. amazing light, perfect snow and overal just the ideal setting.  That all said, It was amazing to film even with my gopro as the video will attest (see below) it was down right filthy! Island Lake Lodge is an exceptional destination located just outside of Fernie B.C. Known for getting massive dumps of snow, located in a unique range that has stunning vistas, amazing tree skiing and a lodge nested around the snowy peaks of the lizard range.

Background:

Powder Guides is an unscripted series based in the Canadian Backcountry with Catskiing / Heliskiing operations. This first series is just a introduction to the people we meet, as we film this upcoming season we are going to be developing a more in-depth look and interview the personalities and bring them to you unscripted.

We have been filming up there the past few seasons, and what struck us as a filmmakers and storytellers was the people. How committed they are to living this life. How they deal with the challenges, the discipline, but also the joy. These are special people living at the edge of human experience…

Of course, Powder Cat-skiing is amazing – it’s something most people will never do in their lives, we are dedicated to capture the culture and the unique essence of each operation and the people who work there – that will transport the audience to connect with the characters we have grown to call our friends.

Hairy Chewbacca and the Euro invasion at FWA

Jan 2013 Europe was not exactly getting much snow… Meanwhile back in Fernie…

It was puking.  Heliboarding team member Mikel Witlox and Scott Martin headed up with Isenseven & Pleasure Snowboard Magazine for a pow odyssey.

This trip was amazing, because we got the lodge and the entire..terrain FWA has to ourselves.

In fact I remember we did a warm up run on what is usually a “Crown jewel” run and then we decided to “Warm up” our legs a few more times…

Anyway… The place we went to was named by the Euros… I actually thought they named it because it was so big and hairy.. but am sorely mistaken..

Read the article by Isenseven and learn a bit more about their experience. Isenseven Article at FWA

It was such a great experience to get Dylan Page to join our crew for a day of shooting. As one of the resident photographers at Chatter he really knows the lens and kills the pow big time.

Kyle snapped a few pics of Dylan charging inbetween him setting up for his next photos…

We will post some amazing photos from him and Kyle on a Chatter Trip Gallery here..

Stay tuned.

Catboarding is frickin so cool… as you pop out from your run onto a “Cat track” you meet your buds, throw your gear on the racks and jump into the cat.

Hit Repeat. Hit Repeat… Hit Repeat.

And on the last run.. sometimes they have a beer on ice for ya.

This photo Dylan Page snapped just catches that moment your overrun by the forest and the cat is a beacon of warmth and your lift to get up and drop pow again.

Pretty much.. Catboarding frickin rules.
