Heliboarding Heaven

You know your at snowboard friendly heliskiing operation when they hand you a sticker like this…

Heliboarding
Heliboarding at Purcell Heliskiing

Only a couple hour drive from Calgary is a Heliskiing operation who embraces snowboarding clients with open arms – Purcell Heliskiing.  This heli-boarding operation is by a family who has a long history in the industry dating back from heliskiing’s  inception in Canada.

The terrain is fantastic and our crew got a mix bag of cut blocks, alpine, tree riding, bumps, and pillow lines.

Mikel Witlox our team rider at Heliboarding Canada is as keen to drop whatever we can throw at him – and with this little pillow section that could be viewed over lunch at their mountain side cabin – Mikel was stoked x 10.

When you get an opportunity to get only a glimpse of the vast terrain at Purcell, the one thing is a certainty. Your gonna leave satisfied but come home wanting to see and experience more. – Heliboarding Canada

Heliboarding culture always intersects with skiing culture – especially heliskiing.  Our guide Jeff ski’s and snowboards and on our second day of guides us on a snowboard.

This to us is just a demonstration of balance that we felt with the family at Purcell they pay homage to their roots and are innovating to the future across both generations.

See our upcoming interviews with Jeff on Powder Guides

Stay tuned as we start pulling together footage from Purcell and we share with you more from Canada’s #HeliboardingHeaven (follow our images with that hashtag)

Powder Guides / Island Lake Lodge Catboarding 2013

We had 3 days of filming at Island Lake Lodge which will go down as one of the deepest of the season!

Island Lake Lodge Catskiing is a premier multi day stay operation with amazing tree runs, open bowls and just mind bending fall line riding.

Craig Kelly made this place famous and photos from photographer Mark Gallup have likely inspired many snowboarders over the years.

This was my second trip up to “the Island” and just wished I had not filmed as a solo mission with my gopro but had my whole crew, because this would have been the shoot of the decade.. amazing light, perfect snow and overal just the ideal setting.  That all said, It was amazing to film even with my gopro as the video will attest (see below) it was down right filthy! Island Lake Lodge is an exceptional destination located just outside of Fernie B.C. Known for getting massive dumps of snow, located in a unique range that has stunning vistas, amazing tree skiing and a lodge nested around the snowy peaks of the lizard range.

Background:

Powder Guides is an unscripted series based in the Canadian Backcountry with Catskiing / Heliskiing operations. This first series is just a introduction to the people we meet, as we film this upcoming season we are going to be developing a more in-depth look and interview the personalities and bring them to you unscripted.

We have been filming up there the past few seasons, and what struck us as a filmmakers and storytellers was the people. How committed they are to living this life. How they deal with the challenges, the discipline, but also the joy. These are special people living at the edge of human experience…

Of course, Powder Cat-skiing is amazing – it’s something most people will never do in their lives, we are dedicated to capture the culture and the unique essence of each operation and the people who work there – that will transport the audience to connect with the characters we have grown to call our friends.

It was such a great experience to get Dylan Page to join our crew for a day of shooting. As one of the resident photographers at Chatter he really knows the lens and kills the pow big time.

Catboarding is frickin so cool… as you pop out from your run onto a “Cat track” you meet your buds, throw your gear on the racks and jump into the cat.

Hit Repeat. Hit Repeat… Hit Repeat.

And on the last run.. sometimes they have a beer on ice for ya.

This photo Dylan Page snapped just catches that moment your overrun by the forest and the cat is a beacon of warmth and your lift to get up and drop pow again.

Pretty much.. Catboarding frickin rules.
